10 New Year’s Golf Resolutions

All year, companies like ours tracked numbers like “golf course openings” and considered the potential effects of the coronavirus on the industry. But as we learned more about the virus and about our collective response; one thing became more and more clear: golf had the potential to serve as an ideal quarantine outlet.

The whys are fairly intuitive. We’ve learned that staying outdoors means a lower risk of transmission, and golf is entirely outdoors. We’ve learned that keeping other people at a distance helps, too, and golf requires no real proximity. You can play golf alone, and you can play without ever going inside, and there’s a good chance you can play without driving too far from your home, too. Golf course operators had reasons to be cautiously optimistic that if they were able to reopen, golfers would flock to the fairways. And the numbers show that’s exactly what they’ve done.

It’s never too early to think about what you want to do better in the new year. With 2021 upon us, it’s time to take the opportunity to resolve to make some self-improvements.

While some may choose to focus their New Year’s resolutions on losing weight or spending more quality time with family, others target their golf game. Here are 10 of the best golf New Year’s resolutions out there.

10. LEARN HOW TO WORK THE BALL

There are nine shots that basically all pros can hit on command. On the other hand, you are probably lucky if you can hit one consistently. Do yourself a favor and dedicate yourself this year to learning how to draw and fade the golf ball. Or just figure out to hit it straight.

9. STOP TAKING GIMMES

So you just knocked it stiff on your seventh shot. Time to leave the putter in the bag and pick it up because it’s “inside the leather.” Not this year. Your game will improve dramatically if you make a point to actually focus on drilling those two-footers. Plus your score at the end of the day will feel that much better – or worse.

8. PLAY FOR MONEY

If you haven’t done this, you should. It’s one thing to hack it around with your weekly foursome, but it’s an entirely different animal to go out there and have something riding on it. Even if it’s a dollar a hole, having to drain a putt when you have something to lose will immediately grab your attention.

7. TAKE A LESSON

Get off your high horse and take a lesson. The golf swing is made up of enough components that it’ll make your head spin, but it all starts with the fundamentals. Nail those down and you’ll be golden.

6. LOWER YOUR HANDICAP

The first question everybody asks when you say you play golf generally is “what’s your handicap?” If you don’t have one already, get one. If you do, set a number as a goal and work towards it all year. Practice, practice, practice and you’ll see a difference. Never stop trying to get better!

5. WALK INSTEAD OF RIDE

Walking your local muni is far more enjoyable than you might think. If you’re worried about the strain of carrying your bag, treat yourself to a caddie if they are available (or bring your own) and pretend you’re on tour. If you’re out on the course, you might as well get those steps in. Exercise is essential to your health.

4. ORGANIZE A GOLF TRIP WITH YOUR BUDDIES

Utilize those vacation days, clear it with your spouse, and put together a golf trip for you and your buddies. Even if it only for a weekend, a trip like this could be the perfect reprieve from everyday life.

3. JOIN A COUNTRY CLUB

There’s nothing quite like belonging to a club. Go out basically whenever is convenient for you, take advantage of some amenities, and hit balls at their (hopefully) grass practice range until your heart is content – what could be better! Granted you’ll probably have some social obligations, but that’s nothing you can’t handle.

2. DRESS TO IMPRESS

While you don’t need to be as loud as two-time major winner and American legend John Daly, step up your game and dress like you know what you’re doing. Get rid of your awful cotton shirts and wool pants and get yourself some breathable, wicking fabrics that ideally match. When you look good, you feel good – and when you feel good, you play good. It’s science.

1. MAKE A HOLE-IN-ONE

Of course this is a lofty one, but it’s not entirely impossible. You just need the right attitude and a decent amount of luck. Every time you step up to a par-three this year, remind yourself that it’s a brand new opportunity to jar one. Just make sure you have a witness.
