Brooks Koepka’s Recent Interview is Rubbing People the Wrong Way

Brooks Koepka is making waves again. He recently sat for an interview with Golf Digest where he talked about his struggles being on the Ryder Cup Team. After the article was released, many people saw Koepka’s comments as disrespectful and questioned his position on the U.S. Team. Others felt that Koepka was just the only one brave enough to say it out loud.

Golf Digest asked Brooks how being on the Ryder Cup team differed from his experience in other tournaments.

“It’s different. It’s hectic. It’s a bit odd, if I’m honest. I don’t want to say it’s a bad week. We’re just so individualized, and everybody has their routine and a different way of doing things, and now, it’s like, OK, we have to have a meeting at this time or go do this or go do that,” Koepka said.

“It’s the opposite of what happens during a major week. If I break down a major week, it’s so chill. You wouldn’t even believe me. I go to the course. I play nine holes. I go work out. Other than that, I’m sitting and watching TV, taking my mind off golf with relaxing stuff.”

Among those upset by Koepka’s comments was former U.S. Ryder Cup captain, Paul Azinger. During a call with NBC Sports, Azinger said he felt that Brooks was not taking the team seriously and should give another golfer the chance to play instead.

“Brooks, when I just read that article, I’m not sure he loves the Ryder Cup that much. If he doesn’t love it, he should relinquish his spot and get people there who do love the Ryder Cup,” the 2008 winning captain said.

“Not everybody embraces it, but if you don’t love it and you’re not sold out, then I think Brooks should – especially being hurt, should consider whether or not he really wants to be there.”

No doubt it can be challenging to transition to being part of a team after being focused on individual performance for every other competition. Is Brooks being ungrateful?

  1. I’m with Brooks. I enjoy the game tremendously for the game itself . If you have to get into a regiment other than your own, we’ll there goes yourgame

  2. There is always something surrounding Brooks, first Dustin Johnson, and all the turmoil with Bryson, now…he is a very talented player, and he ‘knows’ it. He is a distraction…hope it doesn’t cause an issue with the Ryder Cup team.

    1. Brooks is all about Brooks!!! He does not do well in a team setting. I’m sure he will use his injuries as an excuse for any bad play. He should give someone else the chance to play for Ryder Cup.

  3. Brooks should be playing in the NBA. If I were Strick, I would play him singles only where he would excel. Then he could “chill” for the week, just like before the majors.

  4. Brooks is all about Brooks, this is about the USA and at this time in the USA we need something positive. He will not be an asset to the team. He needs to stay home and think about himself as always

  5. This is so over reactive by Azinger and the Koepka naysayers his comment did not sho any disrespect. He just summed up about what was different than regular PGA & USGA weeks. So what
