Is it important to wear the right golf shoes? Experts reveal the truth…

“Do I need to buy golf shoes?” you might wonder if you’re just getting started with the game.

The simple answer would be no, of course not. However, most courses do not let you play in street shoes. At the very least, you’ll need a flat-soled athletic shoe, but that won’t help you improve your game. Although you might be able to walk the course with cross-trainers, there are several disadvantages to doing so. The right golf shoes can make all the difference in the world.

“Professional golfers refer to their shoes as “equipment,” explains Patrick Trubiano, Senior Product Line Manager at FootJoy Footwear, which has dominated the golf shoe market for the past 50 years. “Golf is no different from any other sport. There are features of the golf shoe that work with the game of the golfer, their swings, and their foot movement.”

Even the most affordable golf shoes these days are quite comfy. There is, however, no one-size-fits-all golf shoe. We’ll look at the many sorts of shoes and some of the innovation that’s incorporated into them in this article.

Golf shoes offer many advantages

While metal spiked golf shoes are no longer available in stores (most courses prohibit them because they damage the greens), current golf shoes, with or without plastic spikes, nonetheless give plenty of traction. Fortunately, the grip in these shoes is just as good (if not better) than that of those old metal-spiked shoes.

The majority of golf shoes are waterproof, but not all sneakers are. So there’s a solid reason to wear golf shoes: nothing beats getting your feet wet on the first hole and having to play the next four hours with soaking wet feet.

Golf shoes are also made to make it easier for walkers to complete the 18-hole course. In-sole foam technology from certain firms even include energy return. Golf shoes also provide the required stability for swinging. Meanwhile, SQAIRZ, a younger shoe company in which six-time major champion Nick Faldo has invested in, boasts that its shoes will enhance distance because of their remarkable stability and “ground connection.” When Faldo tried a pair of SQAIRZ on the range, he hit his drives “an average of seven yards farther” than another brand. While we won’t deny Faldo’s claim, the fact remains that golf shoes absolutely matter.

Are golf shoes necessary for beginners?

Some coaches want players to practice in sneakers because it prevents them from swinging too hard. To launch a great shot when there isn’t much traction — like when a golfer is wearing sneakers — proper tempo, balance, and swinging inside one’s own self are all necessary. However, all golfers, including newbies, should get a pair of specialized shoes.

Even the most inexperienced golfers are handicapped by not wearing golf shoes.  Granted, if you just play once a year, you probably don’t need a pair, but if you’re just starting out, they’re essential. In addition, current golf shoes have advanced significantly in terms of technology. Mesh uppers and outsoles that move with your foot, soft leathers, all with great style are widely available today.

What’s the difference between spiked and spikeless footwear?

You are mistaken if you believe that traction requires shoes with seven or more sets of spikes in each sole. Spikeless outsoles with designs that nonetheless grip the ground are now available thanks to current technology and TPU (thermoplastic urethane) materials.

Spikeless shoes are easy to wear both on and off the course, which is one of the benefits of playing in them. At many clubs, a golfer can play 18 holes and then just wipe his or her shoes before entering the clubhouse for dinner.

Most serious golfers, on the other hand, have many pairs of shoes, including spikeless and spiked golf shoes, depending on the conditions. If you’re walking on a hilly or damp route, spiked shoes are a better option, whereas spikeless shoes are more comfortable in dry weather.

Spikeless shoe sales have increased dramatically in recent years due to improved technology. According to Trubiano, while only around a quarter of tour players wear spikeless shoes, customers are evenly split. Surprisingly, the market for spikeless golf shoes for women is roughly 80%. FootJoy’s Pro SL models, a spikeless shoe line worn by devoted golfers and tour players alike that performs as well as anything on the market, have been a best-seller for the last few years.

How long until you should start looking for a new pair?

Today’s golf shoes are manufactured so well that they last a long time. If you just play once a week, one pair of golf shoes should last you at least two seasons. However, if you have more than one pair, rotating them will help them last longer.

However, it is largely dependent on your level of commitment as a player. Every year, many golfers replace their shoes, not just for performance but also for style. That’s true, golf shoes are also clothes, making them a vital aspect of your total appearance. Golf shoes will make you appear the part even if you aren’t a terrific player. In actuality, some golfers enjoy having a variety of colors to match their clothes, which is perfectly acceptable.
