Phil Gets Edged Out for PGA Tour's Inaugural PIP

Tiger Woods hasn’t competed in an official PGA Tour event in nearly a year and a half as he recovers from a car accident in February, but he did win on Wednesday when the circuit unveiled the inaugural Player Impact Program list.

Woods came in #1 on the list, which is based on a combination of five criteria: Nielsen ratings, Google searches, MVP Index, Meltwater Mentions, and Q-Rating, which measures a player’s attractiveness and popularity on social media. For placing second, Woods received a $8 million incentive, while Mickelson received a $6 million bonus.

“I’d want to thank all the crazy (and real supporters too) for… helping me win the PIP!!” Mickelson said on Twitter in late December after winning the PIP. Mickelson also clarified in the same tweet that he had to add an event he hadn’t played in recently in order to qualify for the $8 million award (Sentry Tournament of Champions).

The Tour, on the other hand, disputed Mickelson’s claim, pointing him that Nielsen ratings are calculated quarterly and wouldn’t be available until mid-February from the autumn. The Tour also had the results audited before making them public, according to one member of the Player Advisory Council.

Rory McIlroy was in third place on the PIP, followed by Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, and Bubba Watson. The bonuses for the third through tenth places on the list totaled roughly $3 million.

Woods hasn’t competed in an official Tour tournament since the 2020 Masters in November, but he did compete with his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship late last year. Team Tiger finished second at the PNC, but Woods dominated traditional and social media headlines in the fall to win the first PIP title.
