High School Sophomore Shoots a 57 in Conference Championship

Nothing has alluded golfers on Tour more than the highly coveted 59. Only 11 pro golfers have madNothing has alluded golfers on Tour more than the highly coveted 59. Some have come very close but the pressure gets to be a little too much and those birdies don’t come easy. Only 11 pro golfers have made it onto the 59 club. The LPGA has only seen this crazy score just one time and that was done by Annika Sorenstam.
Bryson almost joined some of his fellow golfers at the BMW Championship in August. He ultimately missed a birdie putt on 18 to leave him with a still impressive 60 to close out his round.
Only one PGA Tour member of the 59-club has also shot a 58: Jim Furyk. But on Tuesday, one high school sophomore in North Carolina incredibly one-upped Furyk’s feat.
Macy Pate, a Reagan High School sophomore, did the unthinkable in the Central Piedmont 4-A Conference championships, firing a 14-under 57 to win the individual title and break a host of scoring records.
Congratulations to @RRHSAthletics Sophomore Macy Pate shooting 57 and breaking the @NCHSAA 18 hole scoring record!@espn @myfox8 @CGAgolf1909 @TYGAgolf @JoeSireraSports @GolfweekRingler @GolfChannel#WeBuildChampions#WeArePfafftown pic.twitter.com/NZx657JkOc— Reagan Girls Golf (@ReaganGirlsGolf) October 12, 2021
Pate’s lights-out performance happened at Bermuda Run West at Bermuda Run Country Club in North Carolina. The best part of the story might be how Pate finished off her historic round.
When she had a chance for birdie on the 16th hole, she knew if she drained it and parred her way in she would shoot a 59, two shots better than the conference scoring record of 61. Instead, she made the putt and then birdied the final two holes as well.
“I made that putt and felt relief,” Pate told the Winston-Salem Journal, “but then I birdied my final two holes for the 57 so it was very exciting,” Pate said.
Despite her incredible finish that gave her a 30 on the back nine of the par-71 course, it pales in comparison to her front-nine score. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Pate, the No. 1-ranked girls player in the state, shot a ridiculous 27 going out.

Spanning over half a century, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am has undergone changes in latitude as well as attitude. But the core of the tournament remains not only the exceptional golf by the world’s best players, but also the lore surrounding each yearly winter extravaganza.
